Something is amiss in the projections of vehicles using Arthur St. Allegedly 700 of the 1,050 trucks per day travelling on Arthur St. are going to or coming from designated locations within Elmira and are coming and going generally to and from the south not the north to service factories etc. Also we are told that the majority of the town's industrial area such as Lanxess, Sulco (CCC), Elmira Pump, EGS, Bridgeland Terminals etc. are on the east side of town . In fact most are right along Union St. Absolutely none of these locations remotely requires their trucks going through downtown Elmira . To be blunt they would be idiots to drive their trucks to downtown Elmira (Arthur St) in order to get out of town. Simply use the already existing and recently upgraded Union St. to go south . If you're going east or west then access Church St. at Duke St. North might require Riverside Dr. out to Arthur St. north of the downtown.
The Record article written by Bill Jackson is titled "Meeting for possible bypass draws crowd in Elmira" and is on page A5. Our non-illustrious mayor Shantz prefers the east side route of course. It will likely please the few industries on the east side of town north of Church St. such as the Pet Food Plant, Bio-En etc. Again I suspect that they are indeed driving right through the downtown to and from their businesses. So is this push for an east side route all about pleasing two or three businesses as well as covering over hundreds of tonnes of toxic liquid wastes that have migrated (gravity flowed) from the former Uniroyal Chemical over to the east side Stroh and Martin farms?
