BIO-GAS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Two separate letters with two different views are published in today's (Aug. 27/11) Woolwich Observer. Laurie Jonkman of Elmira believes that the proposed bio-gas plant will be primarily negative for residents and nearby schoolchildren whereas Douglas Draper also of Elmira believes otherwise. While fundamentally agreeing with Ms. Jonkman I must acknowlege Mr. Draper's last point namely: "So if Bio-En is out of the question, coal plant in Elmira anyone?".

  1. Bio-En's plan relies 100% on diesel truck transported waste sourced from outside of Elmira, and burns methane in a generator to make electricity. So where is the carbon reduction and ending dependency on fossil fuels here, to be worthy of a Ontario Renewable Energy Application approval?

  2. Good question. Certainly the diesel fuel for the trucks isn't helpful. My hope is that the volume of methane gas presumably produced by manure, foodstuffs etc. will produce relatively large quantities of electricity without the addition of further fossil fuels. Here is where I would really like to see reliable numbers. Is the electricity that this project will sell back into the power grid actually reducing our carbon footprint and our use of fossil fuels while considering transportation use of fuel?
