WIND SIMPLICITY IN ELMIRA DOES WELL

Last Saturday's Woolwich Observer has a story about a local Elmira manufacturer on the front page. The story is called "Wind power continues to increase capacity". Wind Simplicity is located on Union St. in Elmira and are best known for smaller turbines such as their Windancer. It is a wind turbine for residential or commercial applications. While wind turbines are having problems including to date a lack of completed peer reviewed studies dealing with alleged health effects from large wind farms; nevertheless the smaller units as well as individual ones have not had those same negative comments. Also as president and CEO Sharolyn Vettese advises "...one of the advantages that small wind turbines have over big ones is we can build them, implement them, and install them faster than the big ones. We could also be a shot in the arm for the economy.".

  1. This seems to be a site that we could use here in Hamilton. I saw your site on the board at work and thought I would check you out. How many work here? Can anyone join? If I had questions can I ask them on here? Thanks. Brett.

  2. O.K. Brett you've got me a little confused as to what you're asking. This site (Elmira Advocate) is a one man show (me: Al Marshall) although with the good fortune of having numerous colleagues and friends involved environmentally. This posting today about Wind Simplicity is simply a discription of a local environmental company who are currently in the news for their renewable energy efforts etc. If you have questions of an environmental nature yes you can ask them here although I would prefer if the questions if at all possible were somewhat related to the particular posting of that day. I hope this has been helpful.

    1. I think Brett may be talking about pollution issues in general and how it would be a great idea to discuss them amongst different communities. I am also very interested in your site especially with regards to Chemtura since I reside in Scarborough near Chemical Court where Chemtura is located. Chemtura was recently fined $150 000 for a sulphuric acid spill that occurred in Nov 2010. They failed to sound the CAER alarm until 1 hour after the spill. Still today, our community has no idea what the chemical concentrations of sulphuric acid we were exposed to and why they failed to sound the alarm immediately. This is not Responsible Care!!! I look forward to all your postings! Keep up the great work!!!

  3. Kim: Are you aware that Chemtura has just received their *Responsible Care verification for all three sites namely Elmira, West Hill (Scarborough) and Guelph. Also the West Hill representative showed up in July 2011 and hasn't been back through the Dec/12 and Jan & Feb/13 deliberations. Chemtura received this verifcation despite Dr. Dan Holt the Chair of the Chemtura Public Advisory Committee (CPAC) voting against it. Here in Elmira, Chemtura last blessed our community in September 2010 with a combination of acetone and diphenylamine and were fined as well.

  4. I wasn't aware of this and I feel completed cheated as my daughter and I and many community members were subjected to sulphuric acid mist in Scarborough. How can Chemtura receive Responsible Care verification when they are completely irresponsible? They can't even warn the public immediately of their spills nor sound a CAER alarm that is supposed to be in place to do just that! Who passes these verifications? Why are Corporations allowed to do their own spill investigations leaving communities wondering what they were really exposed to? Why can't Chemtura come up with a chemical concentration figure that the public was exposed to? Do they think that firing their managers will satisfy our need for justice? We are talking about justice here because we are dealing with our basic right to clean air. Super funds, popcorn lung and toxic spills...Chemtura should receive Irresponsible Care verification!!!

  5. Agreed and I've given the details here in the Advocate as to how they and the CIAC manipulated the process including stacking the verification team with friends.

  6. Yes! UnClean friends! Chemtura doesn't even come close to any standard of a "gold standard". I would describe their initiative as secretive. In no way have they been accountable or responsive to the public! Whoever gave them Responsible Care verification should be ashamed!
