CPAC's MEDIA RELEASE RE: AGENT ORANGE & DDT

CPAC (Chemtura Public Advisory Committee) have sent out a Media Release advising their position in regards to Chemtura's (Uniroyal Chemical) proposed remediation of Dioxins and DDT on the south-east corner of their site. CPAC and their Chair Dan Holt have listed a number of reasons why they feel Chemtura's plan is totally inadequate. These include technical reasons surrounding both past and current mobilization of these compounds and hence discharge into Canagagigue Creek. They also include the local community's input to this proposed cleanup as well as the stated objectives of both the Ministry of the Environment (M.O.E.) as well as Chemtura. Finally CPAC have raised the issue of Responsible Care and the Chemical Industry Association of Canada (CIAC). Chemtura failed their last reverification attempt last summer due to problems with community communications. Chair Dan Holt ends the media Release with these words "In light of this, CPAC believes that it is critical for Chemtura to reconsider their proposed action plan and implement the preferred option that evolved from the community input provided, and for the MOE to assist CPAC in facilitating a reconsideration.". Further to these discussions around mobilization of Dioxins and DDT, CPAC's SWAT Team have been researching and distributing to CPAC members information concerning solvent mobilization of hydrophobic compounds such as Dioxins and DDT. It is very discouraging when Chemtura and their consultants (CRA) appear unwilling to acknowledge established research indicating the circumstances under which solvent mobilization of these compounds can occur. A bald, blunt, blanket statement denying solvent mobilization is an insult and an affront to the public as well as to CPAC. Chemtura and CRA are allegedly professionals. Defend your statement. Qualify it even. But simply pretending there is no issue, along with support from your partners in pollution, the M.O.E., simply make you look like you're lying.

  1. Oh more genius from citizens not qualified to take a fart let alone comment on toxic waste. Did CPAC spend last night in a Holiday Inn Express? Leave this $hit where it lies. No one wants to be exposed to this stuff if it were to be dug up.

  2. Well actually above and beyond intelligence, common sense and hard work, there are also two members of CPAC who are professionals in the field namely Ron Campbell and David Marks. Ron owns and operates Acute Environmental and David is a hydrogeologist with RJ Burnside Consultants. Sorry what did you say your qualifications were again?

  3. I lived in Waterloo and Kitchener for a few years in the 1960s My ex husband worked for the City of Kitchener Parks dept. He used a mixture of DDT and Chlordane to spray on trees and parks in Kitchener! Sometimes he, and a co-worker did that kind of work on saturdays for extra money. In June 1966, he crought some DDT and Chlordane home, taken from the City parks Dept., and had me sitting on the floor holding the bucket while stirred it with a long stick. Obviously I was the one that inhaled it ..twice that month...and by the first week of July 1966, only weeks after inhailing it, I began having diarrhea all day and every day EVER SINCE THEN! I can no longer tolerate food because of that, and no longer tolerate medicine, because food has chemicals in it, as do medicines! In the '60's it was sprayed over Base Camp Gagetown, N.B., by the US military, with permission of Canada's government...to see how it affects people before they'd use it to spray in Vietnam! Check it out, the info is there, and soldiers have yestified to it...and people that lived there then are now getting cancer because of it, and some have died. It will also be how I will meet the end of my life!
And, some people have been denied their claim for compensation, because HARPER set a date for claims, they must be dignosed with cancer before that date or denied receiving a measly $20,000. compensation! Cancer does not appear before a set date!

  4. I'm sorry I only spotted your comment a few minutes ago. Even though Rachel Carson's book "Silent Spring" came out in 1963, most people still didn't understand that these chemicals are poisons back in the 60's. I'm very sorry for your health problems as a result.
