My understanding is that Agenda Item 4.3.2 at Woolwich Council meeting Tuesday evening will be Tiffany Svensson praising the heroic efforts over the years of Uniroyal/Crompton/Chemtura and now Lanxess to clean up the nasty pollution left behind because nobody knew any better. Then Agenda Item 4.3.3 will be yours truly suggesting that hey wait a minute, exactly how smart do you have to be to know better than to dump directly into the local Creek. Of course as the saying goes the truth is sometimes found in the middle of two opposing views.
Were there any serious waste disposal options for Uniroyal Chemical from 1944 until 1970 when the most blatant dumping finally ended? Were these options presented to Uniroyal by either the Ontario Water Resources Commission (OWRC) or later by the Ontario Ministry of Environment? Would the options presented have avoided the shutdown of Elmira's drinking water aquifers? Would they have avoided at one time our creek (Canagagigue) almost being devoid of life? Would hundreds to thousands of people been spared ill health and premature deaths?
Nobody can change the past only the present and the future. We need to be certain that our current actions are in the best interests of the public and the environment, not the best interests of either Lanxess Canada or the Ontario Min. of Environment (MECP).
